Heidelberg O-40

Heidelberg shoots down Moon 2-0

The Heidelberg O-40 team picked up their first victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Moon.  The game was a match-up of the top two teams from last season’s Second Division.  Both Heidelberg and Moon have moved up to the top tier Premier Division this season.  Heidelberg opened the game in a more defensive 4-4-2 lineup and the change immediately paid dividends as Moon could muster very few chances at the Heidelberg goal.  Any shots that did get thru were either well wide or easily stopped by Heidelberg keeper Lee Fisher.  The first quarter ended scoreless as neither team’s offense seemed to be clicking.

The second quarter was much of the same as Heidelberg’s defense, led by sweeper Matt Veres, continued to stymie the Moon attack.  Midway thru the quarter, Veres would leave his mark on the game again, this time on the offensive end.  Veres was wide open when he received a throw in on the right sideline.  He then turned and ripped a curling left footed shot into the far corner of the net that the Moon goalie had no chance to stop.  Moon was stunned and continued to press in an attempt to tie the game.  About 2 minutes from halftime, Heidelberg struck for their second goal of the game on a quick counter attack.  Forward Vince Schmidt carried the ball down the right wing before feeding a cross to a streaking Lee Coughenour.  Lee tapped home and Heidelberg led 2-0 at the half.

The second half of the game produced no more scoring, but it did produce a tremendous team effort by Heidelberg.  Time and again Moon’s attack was shut down and Heidelberg used some smart, simple passing to control much of the second half.  Everyone in the lineup contributed to the win and Fisher did his part by making some timely saves in registering his second clean sheet of the season.

Heidelberg’s record is now 1-1-1, good for 4th place out of 8 teams in the Premier Division.  Heidelberg’s next game will be on April 28th vs Accrington Stanley.

Heidelberg ties Accrington Stanley 2-2

The Heidelberg O-40 team continued to show that they will not be outmatched since moving into the top tier Premier Division.  Heidelberg rallied twice from a goal down to earn a hard fought draw against Accrington Stanley.  The game was played on a swampy field and in a drizzle that was just enough to make things miserable for all.  The first quarter began with both teams struggling to control the ball.  The slick conditions made every pass, trap or shot an adventure.  Accrington opened the scoring midway thru the quarter.  Heidelberg was guilty of watching as the Accrington midfielder hauled in a cross from the right wing and fired home unmolested from 18 yards out.  The quarter ended with no additional scoring.

The second quarter was evenly matched as the teams traded possession up and down the field.  Heidelberg keeper Lee Fisher made several fine stops, his best a close range shot from the left wing.  Heidelberg mounted some offense of it’s own but did not severely test the Accrington goal.  About 5 minutes from halftime, Heidelberg finally broke thru to get the equalizer.  Dave McKelvey’s corner from the left side was mishandled by the Accrington keeper and Vince Schmidt bundled in the rebound from 6 yards out for his first goal of the season.  The half ended with score 1-1.

The second half began with some bad news as forward Brian Zura aggravated a leg injury and could not continue.  Things only got worse as Accrington regained the lead minutes into the third quarter.  Heidelberg seemed to still be enjoying the halftime break as the Accrington forward maneuvered around the Heidelberg box and fired home from 12 yards out.  The goal set Heidelberg on their heels as Accrington pressed for the backbreaker goal.  Heidelberg’s defense stood tall to keep the deficit at 2-1.  It was with a fine individual effort that Heidelberg would erase that deficit.  Vince Schmidt gathered the ball on the left sideline and dribbled between three defenders into the Accrington penalty area where he was hauled down from behind.  The referee had no choice but to award a penalty kick which was deftly converted by midfielder Pat Tinney.  Heidelberg had new life as the quarter ended 2-2.

The fourth quarter was hard fought by both teams.  Opportunities came and went on either end of the field as both teams looked for the go ahead goal.  However, neither team could find pay dirt, or on this day pay mud, and the game ended 2-2.  Heidelberg again received contributions from all players on the field and their record now stands at 1 win, 1 loss and 2 ties.  The team is off until May 12th when they will play at current division leader Internationals FC.

Tornados pull out 1-1 draw vs Internationals FC

The Heidelberg O-40, playing their first road game of the season, continued to show its resiliency by earning a come from behind 1-1 draw against Internationals FC.  Both teams began the game a bit sluggish, feeling each other out and looking for a breakthrough.  The majority of the first quarter was a slow paced, pass around game with neither team seriously threatening the others goal.  About 4 minutes from the quarter time, Internationals got the break they were looking for.  A misplayed ball in the Heidelberg backfield, an unlucky bounce on a rock hard field and some lax marking all contributed to the goal that would put Internationals up 1-0.  Keeper Lee Fisher made a fine save diving to his right, but when the rebound popped loose, an easy tap in was left to put Heidelberg behind.  The first quarter ended 1-0.

The second and third quarters of the game were much of the same.  Uninspired play from both sides resulted in few shots and even fewer quality scoring opportunities.  After three quarters the score remained 1-0 Internationals and there seemed little evidence that the result was going to change.

Heidelberg finally seemed to get its’ wake up call in the fourth quarter.  Their play picked up as they pressed forward for an equalizer.  Pressure in the Internationals box led to a Pat Tinney drive that was unfortunately blocked by a defender to preserve the lead.  That would soon end five minutes later as midfielder Lee Coughenour took matters into his own hands.  Lee dribbled past two defenders just outside the penalty area and fired a low, hard shot past the keeper into the short side of the goal.  The goal changed the dynamic of the game as both teams picked it up looking to gain the lead.  Although each team had some chances, neither could find the game winner and the score at the final whistle was 1-1.  Although they didn’t play their best game, Heidelberg continues to show they are not out of place in the Premier Division.  Heidelberg’s record now stands at 2 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss.  Two games remain, including a rematch against Internationals FC.
