Heidelberg
O-40 opens with 0-0 tie (by Dave McKelvey) No one really knew what to expect. The Heidelberg O-40 men’s soccer team ventured into new territory against some stiffer competition in their first game since being promoted to the PMSL’s top Premier Division. Their first result was a 0-0 tie against Inter United, the Premier Division’s runner-up from last season, in a hard fought game played at the CV Intermediate School oval. The game started out slowly with both teams trying to shake off the rust from the off season. Inter carried the play early, pressuring the Heidelberg defense but failing to register any significant scoring threats. Heidelberg’s offense finally got on track midway thru the first half, producing several scoring chances, but was unable to finish. The best opportunity came when forward Vince Schmidt saw his chip shot over the Inter goalkeeper bounce just wide of the goal. The first ended with neither team able to dent the score sheet. The second half began with Inter applying the pressure on the Heidelberg defense. Inter had several scoring threats but were unable to beat Heidelberg goalie Lee Fisher, who had a tremendous game. Fisher made several great diving stops but would save his best effort when it appeared Inter would finally break the deadlock. About ten minutes from the final whistle, Inter was awarded a penalty shot after a hand ball in the box. Fisher dove to his left, stopping the kick and keeping the Tornados in the game. Heidelberg mounted few scoring threats in the second half, but almost pulled out the victory in a frenetic final two minutes that saw rushes by both teams. The final whistle ended the game in a scoreless tie.
Although being outplayed at times, the result was not a disappointment for a first game back against a quality opponent. Player of the game - Lee Fisher. Heidelberg
washed away by Harmar 7-4 The Heidelberg O-40 men’s game mirrored the weather on April 14th. A cloudy sky greeted the players as the game began and Heidelberg jumped out early on last season’s Premier Division champs. Forward Brian Zura outhustled his man to a loose ball on the right sidelines and fired a shot from about 30 yards that found it’s way into the open goal that was mysteriously vacated by Harmar’s goalie. After a quick strike by Harmar to tie things up, Zura again beat his man, this time down the left side of the field and crushed an unstoppable shot past the keeper. Minutes later, Heidelberg’s pressure produced their third goal of the quarter as Lee Coughenour fired home from 6 yards out. The quarter ended with Heidelberg up 3-1. The second quarter proved to be a different game. Harmarville scored a quick goal to make things interesting. Heidelberg keeper Lee Fisher got a hand on the shot but the ball bounced off the post and off Fisher’s arm and in. Within minutes the game was tied, this time on a wide open effort that Fisher had no chance to stop. Heidelberg stemmed the tide and seemed to be on the way to a halftime tie until defender Sam Grande inadvertently headed the ball into his own goal to give Harmar the lead 4-3. As the second half opened, so did the skies as a steady rained soaked the players. The third quarter saw Heidelberg control a good portion of the game and their efforts finally paid off as Pat Tinney made a nice move around the defender and slotted home the tying goal from 18 yards out. Heidelberg’s joy was short lived as Harmar regained the lead with a last minute strike. The third quarter ended with Harmar leading 5-4. In the final quarter Heidelberg again applied the pressure in attempt to tie the game. However, the offense could not find the range and Harmar scored 2 late goals to make the final 7-4. Fisher could not be blamed as both goals were tremendous shots. Although the final seemed lopsided, Heidelberg put forth a good effort despite missing some key players. debut with 2-0 win. (by Vince Scmhidt) For the first time in more than twenty years, HSC has fielded a youth team. The HSC U12 Girls Select team wins their debut match against the Pittsburgh Football Club 2-0. The scoring was opened by a Heidelberg legacy, Lawton, from the Garver family. The second goal was scored by Landy. A shutout was registered by Breen. HSC dominated play in the game, having the majority of scoring chances. Coaches Lee Coughenour and Vince Schmidt have high optimism for the team's success. "We played well and dominated the game. We have to work on putting more into the back of the net," says Coach Lee. "But that will come around soon enough." The game was well attended by many fans. View pictures from the first game and their schedule at: http://www.heidelbergsoccer.com/u12girls.htm
Heidelberg tied their 2nd game of the season 1-1 against Mt Lebanon in a hard fought battle. Jennifer Condio scored first near the end of the first half to take the 1-0 lead and Mt Lebanon was able to tie the game mid way through the second half. The girls were at there best when they were able to move with out the ball especially in the last 5 minutes of the game were they just came up short with a couple nice attacks and will try and play 60 minutes as they did in the last 5.
All other HSC teams were off on the Easter Holiday weekend.
Women's Rec League - The HSC Women's rec league is still planning to play a spring session. New players are needed to round out teams. No experience necessary. The club will hold Memorial Day weekend scrimmage for all those in town. Mark your calendar for Saturday May 26, 2007 11 AM at the CV Intermediate Center on Swallow Hill Road. *************************** * FIELD UPDATES * *************************** HSC presented a request to the Heidelberg Boro Council to provide input for a full field in the new park. The Council was pleased to have HSC input and requested that we document the items we would like to recommend.
The Shop & Save field was bulldozed over to make room for the new Lowes. This ends an era of having a field in the town that was used for adult and youth team practices as well as many touch football games. While useful for close proximity, due to the fields less than full size, an official game was never held there.
